Lungs are spongy, porous and quite elastic. The left lung is divided into two lobes (upper and lower); the right lung is divided into three lobes (superior, middle and inferior). The right lung is therefore slightly bigger than the left.
The lungs are one of five organs responsible for respiration. Separated by the heart, the lungs are located on either side of the chest. Air is inhaled into the lungs through tubular branches called bronchi that divide into smaller branches until they eventually become microscopic and create clusters of air sacs. Here, oxygen from the air is absorbed into the bloodstream and carbon dioxide, a waste by-productive, enters the air sacs, where it can be exhaled.
