Common Problems

The two most common problems in the large intestine are haemorrhoids and the formation of polyps.

Haemorrhoids

Haemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in or around the anus and rectum, which can be internal or external.

• Internal haemorrhoids are usually not visible except when they enlarge and come outside the end of the sphincter. When they are inside they do not hurt, but when they come out they could hurt from irritation caused by sitting or rubbing from clothing.

• External haemorrhoids are visible and often uncomfortable or even painful.

Polyps

• Polyps can mushroom in the inner lining of the colon or rectum. They can grow from less than a centimetre up to several centimetres. Although usually benign, they can sometimes become malignant.
